I find it impossible not to like this.
They have to hold logs for 5 years now.
If this is so detrimental to VPN providers, why hasn’t China done this - or if they have, why can people in China still use VPN’s? Or am I missing something?
Also if VPN providers leave India then more people will presumably pile into using the Tor network as a proxy - I wonder how long Tor could hold up if millions of additional users start taking advantage of it as an essentially free proxy service.
Yes its to do with exit points (where the servers exist). If the company is outside China then Chinese rules do not apply when the server is also outside China.
Same for India the people in India can still use say NORD to have a VPN since the server can be in any other country. The issue is having servers and/or company in India (or China)
VPN time I suppose.
It would be interesting to have ways for SN to “route around” such censorship. A bit early now, but VPN isn’t really an answer when we are targeting ease of / mass adoption.
SN should supplant much need for the clearnet for data that censors don’t like. Perhaps an “extra hops” option (off/on tickbox) might be something SN can offer for people wanting extra security. I think they’ve removed the extra hop that would have made users more anonymous - not sure if that was a speed issue or if there were other reasons.
