Its a valuable lesson, the ones that didn’t come back to provide this kind of data were the ones hit in the engines, wing fuel tanks and it knda compromises the mission if the pilot is killed or injured.
Some of the mathematics behind the tactics of the RAF Bomber Command 1942-45 is fascinating. Prior to that it was pretty dreadful. Look into the appalling record of the Fairey Battle amongst others.
