So now not only is server a dirty evil word around these parts. Even thinking it makes me a lesser academic/professional. I should think like David or I won’t achieve in life? This is some toxic nonsense.
If you would understand the word differentiate and the meaning of that word it would make you more academic.
No one invents a new thing and then when people ask what it is, that person says - Oh it is just the same thing that already exist. People would shake their heads and wonder, if you invented what already exist then why did you invent it?
Here is where the word differentiate comes in play, you say - I invented this new thing, it is called this new word because it “differ” from what exists today.
And without hours of explaining, people understand within seconds that you invented a new thing, even if they don’t understand or know what it is.
The reason why you call something a vault instead of servers is that you want to differentiate from what exists today. In a few seconds people who hear the new word understands that it is something different from what exists today. They don’t need to have a master in computer science to understand that vaults is something new and different than servers in a serverhall.
The goal, I believe, is to use language that is as precise as possible while being proactive about avoiding confusion further down the road. Using this kind of discussion at a later stage to enhance awareness of SAFE is not a bad thought but fraught with pitfalls. A cohesive plan of action is needed.
Instead of a server, maybe a vault is a dispenser? Contributor? Distributor (think of it as a distributor cap in an ICE automobile)? Aggregator? Integrator? Allocator? Assimilator? Supplier? Facilitator?
Maybe we can come up with a catchy acronym: AXD (Anonymous, Expeditious Distributor)? Some such thing. We, as pioneers, should prepare our future responses carefully and strategically! ![]()
Better: AXL (Anonymous Expeditious Locator)
And vaults are simply the disk drive of the network MAID (massive array of disk drives) is what the SAFE network is built on. A vault is simply one of those disk drives.
I don’t care if you wish to call you pet as a server of attention, but technically a vault is a disk drive participating in the MAID portion of the SAFE network in the context of networking.
Trying to technically calling a disk drive a server in the context of the Internet or its replacement is to be argumentative in my opinion obviously - do i even need to say that, But I do rely on over 50 years in the computing/Internet professional services
If that was enough to convince you. A node holds and secures data = vault.
I think it was the whole conversation that convinced me to be honest.
Like most people ( I assume ) , I just take things much better when they are pointed out without seeming argumentative.
Yes, you are correct, the software does the other bits, so that is a good description of a vault.
The mental picture of neck jewellery with violent differences of opinion is interesting . .
I didn’t see that typo until you pointed it out there. Great post!
Edit: fixing another auto complete change! Ha!
