I’ve been really interested in the Safe Net for a while now, and have started thinking about developing an app for the network now that you are putting it through live testing.
I’m a senior in the Tufts University CS Engineering program, and one of our graduation requirements is to work in a group on a project that is useful to some outside stakeholder(s). We work for two semesters on some project for the stakeholders. I was wondering if any members of the community would be interested in sponsoring a group of students working to implement an app for the SAFEnet. In order to be a stakeholder you would have to be willing handle weekly check-ins once the project gets going (this would likely take the form of providing feedback on progress reports), and providing a definition of what a successful project would look like.
Right now we have been imagining a sort of YouTube for the Safe Network, but we are open to other ideas. Additionally, if a project closer to the core infrastructure of the SAFEnet is preferable, I may be able to garner some interest.
Edit: It would also be great to get a feeling for how technically feasible those in the know think this sort of thing is.
From what I understand, most of these projects have sponsors affiliated with an organization, but given that this is more of an open-sourcy project we might be able to have community sponsors. I will try to find out more.
Can you elaborate on “sponsoring”? How many students, qualifications, history. Would Tufts University allow you to organize any ongoing official Maidsafe events at your school to expand the involvement? Similiar to the MIT Bitcoin Club or the Harvard Bitcoin Club. Are there any Tufts alumni hanging out in Silicon Valley?
Im interested in investing/partnering with a group to make this happen if it can grow legs.
To be a sponsor you would be expected to be willing to devote about 1 hour a week of your time to project check ins, and feedback. You basically just need to demonstrate a desire for the project and a willingness to give our professor some indication of the level of success we achieved.

This is a purely technical project. I’m sure it would be possible to do that through other means, but it would be unlikely to happen through the Senior Design project.
So what your asking for is weekly guidance/critiquing of a Safenet application that you wish to develop. A grans sum total of 60 minutes per week for 2 semesters Is that correct?
This sounds very interesting! I also interpreted “Sponsor” as in money, but spending time and feedback is even better.
Maybe we could write up some other ideas we had (I had a lot but I can’t code them) and pick one that we want the most? I’d love that haha selfish
It’s just that youtube is boring, twitter is boring, dropbox is boring, all those services already exist and yes, theyre all better with privacy, security and freedom, but still kinda boring, compared to something really new that is only possible on the safenet. I’d love so see software that can only exist (in a viable way) on the safenet.
I agree but imagine being able to add the wallet and micro payment abilities to the YouTube like app once enabled. I know watch my bit has that going already but not p2p. I’d like to hear creative ideas though
I agree but imagine being able to pay every single safesite that you visit (proportionally to your interaction with the site) each month. But yea, gimme me your creativity I take it all it’s great

Exactly. It might be a little more or less than an hour a week, and would likely take the form of meetings over Skype or written reviews like Nigel mentioned.

If you want to brainstorm some other ideas, that sounds great. Trying to write an app which makes uses of the crypto currency aspects of the network seems a little premature, at least until those features are in some sort of testing cycle.
Do you and your team have the coding skills to move this forward without assistance from the Safe community or are you looking for assistance at the coding level?
How many team members?
I have no coding skills but would participate at any level and would contribute funds if needed. There are surely a few community members that can bring it.
I think this is a great opportunity to develop the Safenet version of “College Crypto” and expand expand the model to other learning centers worldwide.
If it’s desired to have someone to volunteer to be in a test group for UX I would be happy to write a weekly review to updated versions or however it all plays out.
Many of us here would be thrilled to help, especially when it comes to helping out fellow community members or showcasing capabilities of the network.
There will be many ideas- hundreds or thousands - and lots of time to develop them.
Do your interests lie with a YOUTUBE style application? If that excites you and your team then it should be a YOUTUBE/SAFE application.
Ill offer USD $100.00 equivalent in MAIDSAFECOIN to each Tuft University team member/participant - to a maximum of 5 team members/participants (max USD $500.00) - upon the successful* completion of whatever app you decide. This is not a payment for services - this is seed capital to advance the Tufts/SAFE Project. Alternatively the Tufts team can donate it back to Maidsafe or buy beer or pizza or hookers. This could also be matched by the Maidsafe team if they see the value.
*Success would be determined by min 3 certain qualified Safenet community members and would exclude donors including myself.
So after seeing Jimmy’s post I thought an actual search engine would be great, right? I mean we’re gonna start an new net, we need to see how it evolves and what great stuff people will publish, right from the beginning!
But at the same time, I like the proposed video publishing platform aswell. Been thinking more about it and actually, I’d love to have my own channel where I can put interesting stuff, or link to it. What I don’t like about existing platforms (that I know of…) is that they seem so one-dimentional. Like, you upload a video and thats it. Sometimes the comments aren’t complete bs, but there really isn’t more too it, is it?
I’d love to have more sophisticate discussions about movies, being able to easily link to other videos that maybe are related to mine.
So this might as well evolve into a sharing platform, where you can restrict access to your private movie collection to your friends and family, while your funny cat videos are ofc for everyone !
@edapa, do you only need one sponsor (Nigel seems interested) and what skills are necessary? Like, I can’t code, would I need to in order to spnsor, or something else?
