Have you looked at the thread about a very simple implementation for such a counter? It would cost a few lines of code and a single number sent in each message.
@anon86652309 checked it out so maybe it has merit. Not saying it will work but it’s simple enough that maybe it’s worth playing with in one of the next alphas, on the side.
