Redlands “Enterprise” smart city

Mark, congratulations on your DevCon 2018 “Supercharging Safe & Solid” work and the safeplume demo. I’m following up on your request to get in touch with any ideas and questions. In a recent article Tim Berners-Lee gave the example of a legal firm need for Solid and commented that he is eager to see which community will be first to adopt SOLID principles. In our recent communications I introduced the Council smart city IOT opportunity for a Solid/Safe platform in Australia.

Council’s need is for Regional Management platform which separates data from the applications to enable them to access multiple IOT providers across 14 generic categories without vendor lock within a decentralised autonomous network. This is projected to create an “efficiency dividend of $100ml p.a. after 10 years in one Council (a larger one). Multiply this by 500 Council across Australia and more in the UK for example and it becomes very significant ($50bl p.a. savings/their figures). Councils are seeking an “open data network” solution which also supports inter regional and industry data exchange. This is a natural business case and systemic starting point for a Solid Safe path you describe i.e. maximising profits through system efficiencies combined with a model which systemically shares the benefits back to the community!!

This Council smart city IOT opportunity is in context of our CommunityLink model and “pitch” as follows… CommunityLink is a breakthrough Open Data Ecology (ODE) model that provides true data ownership to address global & local systemic issues via a Design Model for Global Cooperation established and deployed by a representative user established Unidroit style (global legal unification) “Unidata CommunityLink Foundation” (UCL). Leveraging a uniquely engineered decentralised autonomous network the UCL Model provides a structured approach to build a truly connected open data ecology with governance which enables safe inter community data sharing to secure cooperation & efficiency benefits not currently possible. I have described this in some detail in comments to David’s The Impossible Network and Beyond a copy of the Internet blogs.

I have now completed the Redland smart city proposal doc which provides the practical starting point to “supercharge” safe and solid around an actual Council client/partner. We believe that the Redland Smart City proposal provides the immediate commercial opportunity to bring the ICT and other core partners together to co- create a unique new open data business model and product Codemap application which integrates and leverages each of the following stakeholders vision and business path.

I will PM you the link to the Redland proposal which sits in the CommunityLink site (similar to the Solid site which describes the tools and protocols to create these decentralised closed loop hubs or what we call Codemaps) as the showcase. CL sits in the beta 2 ULB site (updated from the link send previously) which described the Open data business model, the business case and investment case. So you will be able to see the prototype proposal, the tools and the context from this link.

I agree 100% that your comment that our opportunity is to supercharge the safe network with project solid. Our belief is that the Project CommunityLink Lighthouse project and Redland proposal completes that trifecta by providing the commercial case to bring all the partners together “now” to leverage the work and path you have started.

I look forward to discussing i. the Redland proposal ii. a possible practical next solid/safe demo step from the plume blog demo (which would include a digital wallet as per your previous solid/safe/pillar comment and look to make safe farmer engagement a standard part of the smart city implementation) and iii. some related questions.

Once again congratulations on your enormous effort.

Hi Mark

Re: safeplume demo

I have a number of questions but need to give the background/context first

Background
Maidsafe have recently entered into an agreement with Identillect re an Enterprise safe license for Identillect clients who need added security… we envisage a similar approach for CL for Council “clients” where the business is the Redland City smart city hub being an Community owned business enterprise which needs this level of security.

The Redlands “Enterprise” smart city proposal need is described as:
i. Local community owned and controlled low cost computing infrastructure/Data Vault with local data ownership & Data Steward governance
ii. Regional Management Platform and Operational dashboard
iii. ICT partners library contributions to relevant to Industry & Regional Access hubs which provide the commercial neutral “open data ecology” interlink to dynamically connect multiple IOT suppliers and multiple Council proprietary data systems through the CL (Open data ecology) ODE system

How SOLID & SAFE support the technical requirements is described as:
Maidsafe have designed a decentralised autonomous network which joins together the spare computing capacity of the local Council and community to establish a locally controlled autonomous “Virtual Campus Super Computer” to operate its Smart city program combined with the ability to interconnect with other smart hubs at a low cost to start up and maintain.

Combining SAFE with the Solid ability to decouple content from the application will enable Councils to establish a multi IOT vendor operating model to interlink proprietary data which is essential for data sharing with IOT vendors and other autonomously operated regional & industry hubs within a national smart open network.

The SAFE Solid Enterprise version will enable the Redland hub to i. manage Council Data permissions or Managed Authentications via the Regional Management dashboard both within the local community and across the CL safenetwork autonomous network ii. connect the IOT supplier proprietal applications to create a network of trusted communities using the UCL Codemap and interlinked legal framework.

This appears to be a natural extension of your demo where you show the solid blog (app?) sitting in the safenetwork(?) and describe library access. In this Council example we are looking at the Regional dashboard/solid app connecting through the enterprise safe which then sets the managed authentications for internal management of the smart city business and external data connections with other hubs through the safenetwork. So in this example (if I am understanding the demo correctly) the Regional smart city dash in solid would link both internally i.e. Enterprise safe to engage/driven the physical IOT sensors & stuff and to the safenetwork for external data exchange.

This link gives an example of Tel Aviv which one first place in the 2014 World Smart City Awards. A key smart city initiative is the DigiTel Residents Club. We have incorporated their functionality description in the Redland proposal described as “to provide Redland locals a personalised web and mobile platform that provides residents with individually tailored, location-specific services delivered via email, text messages and personal resident accounts” (and added) with personal data ownership to deliver the original promise of the internet leveraging innovations underway" with links to promote Solid, Safe and your work.

Questions
Do you see any significant issues/barriers with this approach?
For the Regional management dashboard described is it as simple a matter of having separate libraries for internal and external data/app access?
Do you see any issues in establishing a Solid Personal residents account? Would this be in the enterprise safe or safenetwork proper?
Could we incorporate a link to the relevant safe farmer sign up functionality as part of the Personal Resident Account design so we make safe farmer sign up as a standard part of the smart city implementation?
I’m talking with a partner who has promised to deliver a demo digital wallet solution (as part of a shared prosperity model & Open Value Access matching closed loop A.I. algorithm) soon. Would this be the method to deliver the safecoins and other tokenised citizen benefits which are inbuilt?
You highlight a range of future ICT activities. Are there any other components which would need to be added (gap analysis) to deliver to the Council outline spec described?
Could a smart city “personal resident account with inbuilt safe farmer sign up & digital wallet” be the next step commercial “use case” demo from the plume example?
If we could find a way to bring some funds around these tasks and contributors would this assist?

Hi Ian, I can’t really add much to our earlier chat without digging into the technical details of your plan, which I don’t have time for. The questions you pose are simple, but the answers are not useful unless they are based on first getting to a level of understanding which I don’t have.

It would be great to see something like this happen, but I don’t have the bandwidth to assist you directly, though I hope the demo and the work which follows (mainly by others for a while) will help you to build on these ideas. It believe this route is very powerful, and hope and expect it will lead to new and better ways of doing things.

Hi Mark

I hope the following summary will help with the lay of the land for the questions and the Redland proposal to assist building a shared understanding and path forward for this “route”

In response to your Tim BL “I have a system dream” post I made the comment that "IMO progressing the safeplume demo is the strategic and systemic path of greatest leverage for both the Solid and Safe vision and path to market so i. it needs to be funded and ii. built in an open data model context described, with a Codemap product/prototype, the tools, context. So how do we fund this? Who would have the greatest interest/benefit in making an contribution and support our transition to the new open data ecology and circular economy/democracy vision as per Tim’s dream?"

So where do we start?

The Redland “Enterprise” smart city proposal has been designed as a product/prototype, to capture the tools, in context combined with a collective funding method to support the safeplume next steps as follows;

i. We need to build in an open data model context described above, with a Codemap product/prototype, the tools, context.

a. Prototype
The Redland “Enterprise” smart city proposal is an design example of a “closed loop automation/Codemap product solution”. A Codemap is a methodology to bring multiple stakeholders together to create mutual asset pools within a decentralised autonomous network. Codemap stands for CommunityLink Open data ecology mutual asset pool. We (ULBH) have designed the Redland smart city CODEMAP proposal as the initial product application of our methodology to illustrate how it creates a practical, leveraged commercial opportunity which is built on solid and safe.

As per my comment to your DevCon Tim lecture post we need a practical opportunity to be able to place some ODE interlinks between some proprietal data. The Redland proposal creates a Codemap “microworld” to bring IOT supplier, Industry Access and regional Access ODE (solid & enterprise safe hubs), Community Development centre, Council & residents (Personal residents account/UIA) to test this and capture generic template for others.

b. Tools
We have established the CommunityLink site (using solid as the template) to illustrate how we see the proposed set of ODE CL solid safe conventions will work to support Redlands as a showcase. This also includes a link to the fledgling Project CL github repository to illustrate how i. we secure and integrate the Core licenses, ii. manage the Redland project build and iii. how other self-organising communities can engage to secure the license, co dev partners and funding for their “Enterprise” solution.

c. Context
Within the “connecting proprietal data for the common good” context the purpose of the Redland proposal is to act as the catalyst to formally commence “the endeavour to bring together the brightest minds from business, technology, government, civil society, the arts, and academia” around a practical starting point to establish an ODE CL solid safe system, secure invest & govt grant dollars and to build the proof of concept testnet.

ii. It needs to be funded

a. ULBH is a System Designer/Developer (Bus systems not IT dev). We are working to establish the Social Capital Investment Trust (SCIT) Collective Investment vehicle which has a unique Integrated Portfolio design to fund the Redland proposal and CommunityLink solid safe ODE system as a Lighthouse project. A key objective of the SCIT is to create an public funding pool (from system efficiencies created) for communities to access and to fund the project/system roll out globally.

We see a 4 stage Co phase dev along the lines of

  • Co Phase 1IOC to raise $250k investment to support SCIT $250K grant application– July 3 deadline for grant application
The ideal is to secure contributions from core system stakeholders who will most profit…

  • Co phase 2POC build – testnet between proprietal (IOT suppliers & Council) and connecting ODE hubs…
The $250K investment funds will go to addressing the questions raised starting with defining that gaps between the safeplume path/roadmap you tabled and the required Redland proposal functionality then to build the testnet.

  • Co phase 3 – Early stage commercialisation
This will need to align with the safe Alpha 3 & 4 stages.

  • Co phase 4 – Industrial Deployment

iii. My earlier questions
Hopefully this frames where I am coming from with my questions. Please let me know of any gaps or issues you may see.
