Because of AI’s surprising history, it’s hard to predict when human-level AI might come within reach. When it does, it’ll be important to have a leading research institution which can prioritize a good outcome for all over its own self-interest.

We’re hoping to grow OpenAI into such an institution. As a non-profit, our aim is to build value for everyone rather than shareholders. Researchers will be strongly encouraged to publish their work, whether as papers, blog posts, or code, and our patents (if any) will be shared with the world. We’ll freely collaborate with others across many institutions and expect to work with companies to research and deploy new technologies.

Oh, the vaunted control problem, or problem of who controls whom and the implied defeatest intent.

What is emerging is a world view where everything is code and where code that can self modify (learn) is conscious or aware as a basic property of the code it itself runs on all the way down. The world itself is programmable to a degree but it is we ouselves that we ultimately must modify. The ultimate programmer and hardware are way off in the distance but we can at least see this task of self modification and see that its largely building the kind of awareness that would prohibit engaging in the actual control of another conscious being. Solving the control problem means modifying us because we are already swiming in a super intelligence and its already set us to its tasks which entails us voluntarily and wisely increasing the deep quality of our own conciousness and not at all merely along superficial intellectual lines, its got those covered and also not along tech lines as those seem to be covered too.

Tongue and cheek, if you look at the hero with a thousand faces the point of this conservative world is to evolve the good finally non arrogant sort of liberal.
