you should try to get someone from guifi.net to talk about mesh networks. They seem to be doing pretty well.

looking forward watching the discussion in the future.

I’m 80% trough listening to the previous meeting. Some interesting things being discussed. I’m wondering how much the farming mechanism is written in stone? From what I gather from this discussion is that uptime is really important. Obviously the availability of files is important, but it would really suck if a few hours downtime immediately impacts your farming. Everyone can suffer a power outage or a disruption in the connection with their ISP. It feels less of a people’s network when you need to have an ultimate setup to be able to farm and contribute to the network.

Right now there’s a lot of discussion about DNS on the forum. I wouldn’t mind getting a summary about this in one of the future meetups. For me as a non-technical person the discussion is kind of hard to follow. Perhaps it can be a topic in a future meeting.

Unfortunately the meetup is planned midnight CET so I won’t be able to attend. Not sure I’d have a lot to contribute, but starting an hour or two earlier would perhaps make it more attractive for people from the CET timezone to join the discussion.

That has changed somewhat with non-persistent vaults methodology. Vaults are no longer persistent and expected to be turned off. When a vault is restarted it is given a new ID and begins to fill up with chunks.

The reward algorithm now does not penalise vaults like it did for turning off “each night”.

So let’s say my PC has been on for a week and in that week I stored 200GB of files. Windows installs a critical update that requires me to reboot. I reboot and the 200GB of files are gone and I will start from scratch? Wouldn’t it better for the network to wait for let’s say 15 minutes to see if the node comes back on?

Sorry going a bit off topic here and perhaps the information is all in some other post somewhere.

It certainly is, you need to search for it. suggest looking under “persistent” or “non persistent”

The devs decided to go this way for various reasons and when you read up on it those reasons do make a lot of sense. But yes the refilling sucks.

start here Non-persistent vaults

great topics for discussion -

Would definitely attend if it could move up two hours, but can imagine it would maybe not suit others. Will keep an eye on the thread to see if the time changes

GO LIVE SATURDAY 12TH SEPTEMBER AT 16hrs Mountain time 23hrs GMT

WILL BE AN OPEN FORUM TO DISCUSS ALL THINGS SAFEnetwork

Proposed discussion Topics

  • mesh networks -[furthering an open internet with open wireless ] safenetwork – Medium
  • methods to fund mesh networks through safecoin
  • using Shapeshift to convert BTC to other coins.

Love the topics. Should be able to join you. I think using mesh networks that provide free internet to everyone by using SAFE farming to fund themselves and the people setting them up is going to be huge. I have been researching different hardware possibilities. I just received yesterday some N or AC (can’t remember) linux/WiFi/IoT with OpenWRT built in chips from china that are $17 (HE) with extension boards for another $2. www.dragino.com I am having my hardware network expert/friend take look at them in the next day or so.

Perhaps see if the next one can be a little bit earlier? Like 21hrs GMT. 23hrs GMT is midnight where me most people in Europe (except the UK) are which is kind of late to join. Just a suggestion though, I can imagine that an earlier time wouldn’t be great for some others.

totally agree - time differences mean some people are always going to find it difficult to join live will try and find a sweet spot time wise for the next ANTS meet up or other option to to do two one for people in Europe and one for americas etc

WE GO LIVE IN 20 MINS
