Oklahoma Highway Patrol has a device that also allows them to seize money in your bank account or on prepaid cards

“If you can prove that you have a legitimate reason to have that money it will be given back to you. And we’ve done that in the past,” Vincent said about any money seized.

Whenever we feel badly done to in the UK we only have to look across the pond

Yea, I’ve heard about them seizing cash off people because they apply only one rule and that is large amounts of cash transported on the highway means drug money. Doesn’t matter if you can reasonably show its to buy a car (or whatever) for cash. Also reports that their sniffer dogs are trained to find cash as well as drugs.

Isn’t it some obscure law about seizing possessions used in a crime, and since the possessions are seized, and not the person being charged then there is no presumption of innocence and legal rights. Its just an object not a person. Then you have to apply to the police to get the money back.

In Australia the States have invented the “pre-arrest” where the police can pre-arrest the person then seize their possessions according to the arrest laws. Yet the person is not technically arrested nor charged with any crime. So I guess Australia is not far behind the USA in this respect.
