Hi, am I right in assuming that the ports that vaults and launchers use is completely arbitrary, or is there a hard-wired expectation of certain port ranges?
Yes. Above 1500 and less than 2^16 - randomly chosen. Seed nodes for instance are fixed on reboots, port forwarded nodes may also choose to do that. For normal click and go folk then it’s random.

But keeping above 1500 and less than 2^16 means you do not need root access.
