But it’s more than that. Getting them to download it onto their devices. Phones aren’t supported ATM IIRC. They’ll have to download it onto their computers, something few people outside of the technical community aren’t very adept at accomplishing.

Phone client will be supported early on. Vaults - who knows, but it is the client (SAFE storage, messaging and apps) that’s most important.
Replying to my own thread here but I was just thinking… family photos and videos is a pain in my friggin butt. I usually do a download from cameras and phones every six months or so to the laptop and then I let them sit there for a while for viewing purposes and then every year or so I upload those to my offline storage on an external TB I have.
I think offering people a solution for this problem via things like YouTube tutorials will be as easy as 1,2,3 “How to easily make all your family photos and videos private” & “How to easily access all your family photos and videos in the one place” & “How to upload all your family photos and videos to a private and secure place and access them any time you want!”
Or here’s another one > “How to instantly free up massive amounts of space on your computer” Description: “put all your photos, videos and files into the most private, secure and easily accessible vault ever created”.
I’m no YouTube wizard but i reckon creating videos like this would be almost too simple.
My thoughts on attracting people to the SAFE Network is for SAFE apps or better still an interdependent group of SAFE apps (the Facility) that provides the means for people and people representing corporations to:
• Communicate by all known technologies including education;
• Participate in Commerce involving exchange of commodities including precious metals, products, services and currencies incorporating a facility for investing and borrowing;
• Use and create a new denationalised elastic Currency – a negotiable trade credit (NGT) that remains stable in the long run that can also be safely used as a store of value and a unit of account. I propose that the currency is only created by the parties involved in each act of buying and selling on the Facility where the credit is created by the seller and spent (redeemed) by the buyer. A currency capable of providing both a complement to, and over time, a replacement of the reserve and fiat currencies of the world and yet sufficiently flexible for petty cash expenditures; a currency free of manipulation and speculation. In short a simple debit and credit entry. I propose that upon launch/inception or a stated initial short period, one hundred NGT should be redeemable for one gram of 99.99% allocated gold (gold). This latter provision requires the Facility to stand in the market to purchase gold from its participants who will include reputable mints and bullion dealers which are prepared to accept NTCs as payment. Other provisions provide for vaulting of gold; more on that later.
• The fourth and essential application is to provide a platform for Independent Media to counter the hegemony of the presstitutes that have brought propaganda to an art form.
I propose that all who participate in construction of such a Facility should be remunerated in NTCs whether upon handing over and/or by micro royalties for usage and that the entire Facility be owned by its users in the ratio that their NTCs bare to all NTCs on issue at any given time.
I also propose that the structure and operation of the Facility be governed by Natural Law, follow the principals of Austrian economics and be automated as is the SAFE network.
Don’t leave it too late, we have competition. Central banks beat Bitcoin at own game with rival supercurrency
Do we have any starters?
In '14 I handed out gift certificates I made with the private key QR code. When SafeCoin launches I will trade the tokens for SC for my friends and family.
Chose to do this instead of just giving them MAIDsafe coins because I knew 90% would lose the certificate before SafeCoin launched and it wouldn’t be any loss beyond the cost of the paper.
…Because those aren’t the kinds of things that get the masses excited, interested or involved imo.
I think I’d have to go with Tonda and chrisfostertv on this one. A few people will understand and marvel at the technical genius of safenet, but for the majority it’ll just be another word they hear out of context. What’ll determine their interest and engagement with this new thing they’re hearing about for the first time is what it might be able to do for them (not how it works) and how enthusiastic they feel about that offering.
If people hear safenet in the context of things that matter to and interest them (sex, drugs, piracy, privacy, freedom, money - safecoin fomo) then it might cause them to take a look. If you start trying to explain to the average Joe why decentralised storage and hosting is better than the current option you find most people switch off instantly - at least that has been my experience.
I’m not worried about acquiring users personally, although it’s always a good idea to take positive actions to help that cause ofc. I think people who discover SAFE are going to end up way more evangelical than they were about BTC. The practical applications are so broad and so accessible… BTC and Eth growth will look like child’s play by comparison imo. We have the recipe for a perfect storm - just look at the comparative love, loyalty, devotion and commitment in this forum compared to almost any other crypto… this place is the seed of a mighty oak
Good idea. some years ago I build a small online storage solution and a lot of customers buy the service exactly for that + while long travel to empty ours camera at a net cafe.
We need an easy api and an easy tutorial to put and get file with PHP. This will be interesting for storage solution. Actualy a lot of companies with huge extranet buy an amazon bulk for that. The first step for these companies will be to migrate the data before recode everything.
I agree. We do not need to market to the current darknet participants. They are already here just waiting patiently on the sidelines eager to switch to the new and improved darknet. They also have a short learning curve being use to things like Tor.
99.99% of people in this world won’t hear about SAFE even if you promote it for 10 years.
“Bad” uses don’t need any promotion (by you or whoever). If the network works exactly as it says on tin, they’ll be here before you ready your magnificent pitch and YouTube (!) promotional video… Actually we’ve already had a successful test run with porn (I guess that classifies as “risky”, whatever that means)
I’ve heard multiple stories from early bitcoin adopters about how they were given a casascius coin with 50btc on them by Roger Ver the bitcoin jesus. I love the idea of doing something similar after the network launches with safecoin. Will there be the ability to have a physical representation of safecoin? It seems that each coin would have to have its own wallet id and that would mean each coin could have a hologram sticker covering the keycode passcode and pin to do something similar. But unlike BTC there is no public address to verify actual safecoins… unless the wallet were linked to an api that could reference the balance. Something to think about.
I think part of the genius of SAFE is that it does not necessarily need to be marketed to the end users.
Marketing to developers and corporate/institutional clients would be much better I believe.
If, for instance, a service like Instagram or Snapchat or whomever has SAFE as a backend, the users would never have to know. They would just continue posting selfies and cat pictures and never know the network is doing the heavy lifting.
I see SAFE as more of a platform/protocol than a product. I don’t recall ever seeing an advert for PHP or TCP/IP or HTTP but everyone uses them everyday…I realize SAFE is more than that, but its base is backend, not end user…just my two cents…
Market to developers, make the apps as easy to use/install as existing ones and the rest takes care of itself…the user doesn’t have to spend time actually learning something (gasp!..the horror!!! ) and everyone wins!
How fun would a ranking list of app devs and bounty payouts to users be with a mob theme…lol!..a “hitlist” if you will with the top dev being the “Boss” …After receiving a certain bounty amount you become a “made (or maid!)” guy/gal…haha!
Seems to me that marketing safenet won’t be an issue.
If it is truly uncensorable then it will subsume much of the current darknet markets (DNMs).
When there is a forum app, complete with Bitcoin payment system, then why go to the trouble of coding ones own DNM, when a DMN can be created via a setup wizard, in the manner of some Linux distro?
After that, the mainscream media will provide plenty of publicity, screaming about illegal activities, drugs, guns and child porn.
Just sayin’… it might be like opening Pandora’s box.
Incentive for Developers? Has anyone thought of perhaps including a % of Coin for all data which traverses a particular app. i.e. 1/100 of safe coin , (paid for storage), goes to the app.
People or companies building applications on
the SAFE Network will also be able to earn safecoins.
As they create and release new applications,
they will code their SAFE wallet address
into their application. Based on how much the
application is used, the network will pay safecoins
to the safecoin wallet address of the app
creator. This provides a built in revenue stream
for app developers, one that is directly proportional
to how successful their application is.
So are any developers currently working on anything similar? I know “Drop Box” like features have been mentioned in many discussions BUT is anyone actually building anything like this focused on a mobile device?
Any developers have any idea how difficult this would be to build with the API Set?
The icing on this cake would be if one could tie IOS TouchID, (BiioMetric), authentication to ones Vault!
