Well, I was super smart and only after destroying it did I realize that I had not pulled the logs.

Joking aside, you are better off with an rpi or repurposed 7yo laptop with ubuntu if the budget is tight.

Or ubuntu on Virtualbox if you have enough RAM. 8Gb should be enough.

Yeah - I have both but I was on Windows when @Josh 's halloween surprise came up. That’s my excuse. Got it working now anyway, so I won’t be so ill-prepared next time.
