Coronavirus Mega Thread

Total pish. Ideological self-abuse.
Thank your lucky stars this originated in a country with proper central control. The world owes a huge debt to the Peoples Republic of China and its ruling Communist Party. 70 glorious years, suck it up right wingers.

I get that just provoking some people can be fun at times, but I for one would appreciate a more nuanced discourse. No system has been all glorious for 70 years. This way I can’t really pick sides in a meaningful way.

Very true. I am in panic mode already. Trying to buy masks, for whole my broad family. I have already ordered from multiple sources and hopping to get some soon. Also working on a renting/ buying some property outside of civilisation with plan to buy lot of food in case it spreads more. Those who know about history and epidemic diseases that commonly killed 10-50% of population can’t stay calm. Spanish flu killed 20% of population 100 years ago. Our defence against viruses is limited compared to bacteria. We live in a much denser population than ever before. There is much more interactions between people. Since virus is already worldwide spread, there is no way how to stop it by isolating of people. And this virus is spreading before there are signs of illnesses, so we can’t effectively detect it before it spreads. And it seems some people do not have any sign of illness and they are spreading the virus without knowing it. I think panicking right now and investing some money into protection is the cheapest option. It is super hard to buy some respirator right now. If it spreads more it will be impossible.

I think it’s worth considering that the very ineffectiveness of a bureaucratic government can be a positive thing. Yes, many radically good policies get watered down and lost, but so do radically bad ones.

Suck it up? lmao How glorious those 70 years were indeed, unless ofc you were one of the literally millions who starved to death due to the insanity of that great Communist Party you seem to be worshipping.

Or, unless you’re one of the minorities.

You forgot the CCP is very efficient at silencing dissent or suppressing information. That was one of the reasons why people in Wuhan didn’t get a chance to panic early enough for this crap to not spread this badly.

It’s not Corona virus you need to worry about Joe, it’s blood pressure. You are awfully easy to wind up.
Just like most right wing nutjobs. Now away and pray at that shrine to John Birch in your bedroom.

Thotts n prayers

Let me quietly remind us here that 8 doctors were arrested in early January for speaking up about a potential epidemic. That “brief delay” (of 6 or so weeks) may cost us more than just a millions infected.

Governance is crucial but only when it’s decentralized can it fulfill its function without becoming the very reason behind tragic events including this, a couple other outbreaks earlier, and a number of famines.

Sadly, I do get triggered by idiots [EDIT] but don’t worry, I found a way to hide all your comments so my blood pressure is Safe™ now.

Maybe I got a bit off topic, but I wasn’t thinking about China specifically, or even “socialism” vs. “capitalism”. Sitting in slow and “democratic” Finland, I too sometimes wish for an efficient dictator who could just “get things done”, be it building roads like Hitler or eradicating illiteracy like Stalin.

Anyway, I see a conflict between liberty for the citizens vs. micromanagement of them - not socialism vs. capitalism. If I absolutely had to pick an -ism for myself, and I wasn’t allowed to pick Saschaism, I guess I would pick libertarianism or satanism. But I still support public funding of healthcare, education, police and fire department. I do hunt some, but I don’t think people should be allowed to openly carry weapons in public.

My preference is for Satanism too but Saschaism sounds OK-ish.

I stock up on food and water today. I might not have to, but I better be ready than sorry… By the way, I managed to buy only 2 FFP2 face masks ( FFP2 is the equivalent of N95) from 2 big stores, luckily in the third there were 13 other masks left and I bought them all

Lol, panic buying food now? Panic buying of ffp3 mask is ok, it is hard to buy it now. But food…you can buy it anytime, general public is not panicking yet, there will be lot of time for this. What mask did you buy? I ordered respilon https://shop.respilon.com/, it seems to be order of magnitude better than other ffp3 masks. But delivery time is a month now.

There is no panic here. I eat such food and I see no reason not to be at hand. I read that the only way to slow down the virus is through total isolation. If it is confirmed that there are indeed parts of the HIV virus in it and Ro is over 4 I do not see how they will stop it any other way…

I need masks just to bring food to my grandma if something happens… I bought all 15 FFP2 masks (Different brands) in 3 of the largest hypermarkets in my 2 million city, and according to staff there are no more masks in stores …

There’s little to lose by buying food with a long shelf life. It’s not just that stores would run out of food if/when the stampede comes but also to do the shopping while there’s lower risk of exposure.

As for the test kit, it doesn’t solve much at the moment:

the firm hopes it can deliver 4,000 kits per day

The only problem, the official numbers from China are as reliable as anything else Emperor Pooh and his gang say…

Well, I for example do not eat long shelf food. I eat only vegetable, meat, fruit and nuts. I never eat flour, rise, etc. So in fact for me buying long term food will happen only if I am in high panic mode, since it breaks my diet. But yes, you are right, if you are eating it anyway and you have a place to store it, than you should buy it earlier than later. But I think there are more important items to panic earlier. Like place. Buying/renting a property outside civilisation will be much more difficult later when people start to panic. If 1% panics, then food will be still very easy accessible, but mask will be impossible, best places to stay will be sold out. My priority is,mask, then place, then money (cash, gold, btc, masks), then medications, then food, oil, etc… Simply, I plan to panic earlier than others, but I plan to panic first on scarce and cheap resources, then on scarce and expensive, then on the rest.
