Would it be possible to donate all or part of ones resources to a charity, having all safecoin earned sent directly to that charity? I could see them encouraging their donors to join the safe network to do this as it could provide a sustained source of funding.

One of the original designs was exactly that. It should be simple for an app (smart wallet) to do this actually.
Perhaps invite the bitcoin community to fund their core development in this way? Those familiar with bitcoin know that this is a real dilemma that needs to be solved. What they have now is unsustainable.
