Blockchain to MaidSAFE: You are just one of my sidechains

There is an interesting idea in this article, namely that “the potential universal applicability of blockchains is that anything that can be decentralized will be”. It’s certainly interesting to imagine the range of possibilities for the blockchain (if optimized enough), but correct me if I’m wrong, there’s a glaring error.

The author refers to MaidSAFE as an example of “making use of special-purpose sidechains, decentralized off-chain storage”, but MaidSAFE is not merely a side-chain of Bitcoin’s blockchain.

I think the author is referring to SAFE as an example of ‘decentralized off-chain storage’ which is true, although being pedantic we are a ‘decentralised off chain data and communications network’.
