Alternative/temporary peer to peer messaging/forum

#1

We Safer’s have various means of communicating but so far as I am aware they are all reliant on some server somewhere that could be taken down if things were to go where none of us would like them to go …

Obviously, the Safe Network will fix all of that, but until then I am wondering if we could have a contingency communications network?

There are a few peer to peer communication tools available currently, one of them “Retroshare” has been around for a number of years, it uses public key encryption, and allows messaging/forums/file sharing system.

I’m not sure how effective it might be for people generally, but I’m interested in testing it out with anyone here who’d like to give it a go.

To that ends I’ve created a Safe Network forum and channel on the platform.

I’f you’d like to join, the github page is here: https://github.com/RetroShare/RetroShare

and my public key certificate is:

This Retroshare thing seems very nice! Here is my public key certificate:

I can’t get it to build unfortunately. Will have another go later.

#4

What system are you on? I didn’t build anything. I just added the PPA since I’m on Linux Mint.

#5

Debian 9, I’m missing some Qt files. I have to work now but I’ll try again later

#6

I’m a bit surprised more people haven’t shown interest in Retroshare. I never heard about it before, but it seems really good.

#7

I hear ya! I think it’s only drawback is that it’s not too intuitive - at least for me, I’ve been fiddling around trying to work out how to do things like add my avatar, add a friend … BTW, @Sascha, you are my only one there so far!

There aren’t many open-source peer to peer secure communication systems out there that work decently in my experience and Retroshare covers most bases in terms of what and how you might want to communicate - forums, chat, email, and file transfer.

It’s not the ‘bees knees’ though in terms of download speed and decentralized data storage - it’s no Safe Net!! but in the interim it’s a nice option to have while we wait for Safe Net - beta and beyond.

It’s also a great way that we could communicate if for some wild reason all of Maidsafe’s sites and work were taken offline (super slim chance I know).

#8

Well, the interface is new to me too, but I don’t think it’s that strange. I haven’t messed around with it much at all yet. I don’t understand the difference between TylerAbeoJordan and Devuan-1. And what is “My computer” that it says next to my avatar and name under Network?

I also don’t understand the point of sharing the links like you did below. Where should I put them?

Yeah I shouldn’t have sent them here. I am sending them via retroshare email - I think you can click on them in the email.

#11

Devuan-1 is my computer’s network name … I presume that “My computer” is the default network name of your machine. Perhaps that can be edited somewhere in the preferences.
