The Russian Armed Forces will receive a “highly protected iCloud” - a closed “cloud” storage for official and secret information. The Ministry of Defense has started the creation of a network of geographically distributed disaster-proof data processing centers (TRKCOD). This system will be connected to the “military Internet”, not connected with the usual one. The segment of the future complex is already functioning in the Southern Military District. The cost of the whole project is estimated at 390 million rubles.

As “Izvestia” was told to the Defense Ministry, the formation of the TRKCOD will be completed by 2020. The creation and development of the system is the responsibility of the Main Directorate for the Development of Information and Telecommunication Technologies of the Defense Ministry of Russia. This year, the bulk of the work will be done, which will cost the state 245 million rubles. It is planned that the total cost of the system will be 390 million.

According to Izvestia, in the Southern Military District the first specialized software and technical center has already been created. The system has been tested, and the experience of its application is recognized as successful. In the future such digital information stores will appear in every military district. This will maximize the protection of data from destruction. While at least one segment of the TRKCOD will function, all information will be available to users.

Each segment is, in fact, an autonomous data center. Similar distribution structures are available for hosting providers and telecom operators. Inside the TRKCOD it will be possible to transfer huge amounts of information in seconds. Here, large data technologies are implemented, high-performance computing systems are used. Inside the network, the military deployed an e-mail service with secure transfer of classified information, including documents marked “Of particular importance.”

The data center of the TRKCOD is actually a “cyber-detachment”. Premises with servers will have reliable protection, autonomous power supply, reliable cooling and fire safety systems. Army “cloud” will function only in the DCPD - a closed segment of data transmission. To avoid leakage, this special network is not connected to the usual Internet.

Access to the premises of the centers is strictly limited. DRQ working with computers are protected by connections uncertified flash drives and other external storage media. All software is exclusively Russian. Access to information in the digital repository will be possible only through a PC that is certified to protect state secret service.

The servers encrypt the information, split into several packets and pass on. However, it can not be corrupted or destroyed, as the system will constantly create backup copies.

“The department is well aware that modern technologies should be actively introduced and used,” Herman Klimenko told Izvestia. - So now there is an active penetration of IT into the army. It is more effective here than in civilian industries, using drones, decision support algorithms, etc. Managing mass flights, moving large amounts of equipment and people is an important and difficult problem. The army decides them. And all domestic military technologies have two advantages: they are reliable and simple.

The need to create a similar technology for the US Army has been discussed since 2017. 50 IT companies are involved in the implementation of such a system. It is planned that next year the Pentagon will begin to develop the concept of this technology. The project of the American “military cloud” is estimated at $ 10 billion.

Of course that means autonomous in the sense of the data centre not the operating systems

That includes the storage of fuel for generators, food for the workers, living quarters, generators for backup power, air purifiers, computing resources that do not require outside resources to provide full functionality, and so on though the list of requirements. AND of course workers and an outside communications system to receive commands from the generals, and to connect to to other autonomous data centres and the users who will be using the data centre.   • Any one of the data centres can serve the whole defence force (claimed)
  • Each data centre can be run independently of outside resources (autonomous) Not that the software runs autonomously

About every thing else is already being done by any high reliability data centre. And that is why they can do it in a little over a year.
